Candidate's Statement

I graduated from MUN’s Civil Engineering program in 1982 and prior to joining Public Works and Government Services Canada in 1988, I held positions with a General Contractor, a Heavy Civil firm and an Engineering Consulting company. My experience as an owner’s project manager has covered a variety of areas - marine facilities, building projects, infrastructure planning, major projects and strategic analysis - all of which widened my appreciation of the profession and of the skilled and committed individuals and progressive firms that lead our profession.

I have served previously for one term on PEGNL’s Board and followed that with three terms on the then Discipline Committee, deepening my appreciation of both our profession and our association. My volunteer activities also include a long on-going commitment as a Board member of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, serving as a Board member of my home-owners’ association and a member of it’s Development Review Committee. Through a long association with the Canadian Construction Association, I have had a wonderful opportunity to network with fellow professionals across the country and have come to realize that our profession and the construction industry have a shared interest in quality and integrity. Through my work I have been engaged in a number of Federal departmental committees focussed on gender equality in the civil service with a special interest in women in non-traditional roles.

Going forward I would hope to continue to work on deepening the understanding of the public, especially young people deciding on careers, of the value that the engineering profession brings to society by ensuring safe infrastructure, a healthy environment and socially-conscious development. Additionally, a number of rather public exposures of ethical lapses by practicing individuals and firms in our profession point to a need for reinforcement of our fundamental obligations and code of conduct. I would fully support the association and members in promoting such initiatives.

On a personal note, I share with my husband (also a civil engineer) a great love of travel, movies and all things automotive. Quieter interests include reading, art-appreciation and cooking.
