PEGNL Structural Engineering Guidelines

Purpose of guidelines in general and in particular structural guidelines

Regulation 36 made pursuant to the Engineers and Geoscientists Act, 2008 provides for the association to issue newsletters, guides, statements of policies and standards and other publications.  In keeping with this regulation a number of Guidelines have been developed which relate to professional services and the related high standards required for engineers and geoscientists offering and providing professional services.  The purpose of Structural Engineering Guidelines is to set out the standards of practice which members should meet and follow in providing professional structural engineering services.

History of PEGNL structural guidelines including those involved in the current changes and the current change process

The existing version of the Structural Engineering Guidelines was adopted and published in August 1995 and was in need of updating especially with respect to changes in structural practice including connections drawings.  The project to update these guidelines was carried out by the Structural Engineering Committee and was managed by Rick Tiller, P. Eng.  Others participating in the project are listed at the beginning of the Guideline.  APEGGA and CENL provided support and assistance.  Several members from outside the province contributed to the project.  The work included a review of existing guidelines in other jurisdictions and took about a year to complete and several months to edit.  Drafts were circulated by e-mail.

A summary of the important changes to the structural guidelines that lead to this version

Some important changes include clarification of the roles of the Structural Engineer of Record and Supplementary Structural Engineers.  Some common organizational charts included in the existing version of the Structural Engineering Guidelines were removed because they were not seen to reflect the various models that are used today and were not serving a useful purpose.

Attached through this link is a revised DRAFT version of PEGNL’s Structural Engineering Guidelines, as proposed by PEGNL’s structural engineering Committee. The previous version is available through the PEGNL publications link. Members who are interested in structural engineering matters are provided with this proposed version as an opportunity to comment on the proposed guidelines before the new Structural Engineering Guidelines are submitted to the PEGNL Board for its approval.

Those with comments please respond to Professional Standards Director Leo White, P. Eng at lwhite@pegnl.ca.
