Eric Young, P.Eng. told a forestry conference audience recently that a sustainable forest industry in Newfoundland Labrador is possible and discussed ways of diversifying and modernizing some sectors of forestry.

Ken Shugarue, P.Eng. has been appointed head of the new St. John’s office of building contractor EllisDon Corp. Its first provincial project is to construct a new 500-bed residence at Memorial University.

In a joint announcement by Dr. Charles Randell, P.Eng., Paul Leonard, P.Eng., Sandy Martin, P.Eng., and Minister Shawn Skinner, funding was announced for the new Centre for Arctic Resource Development (CARD) at C-CORE. The Hibernia partners, Suncor Energy and Research & Development Corporation of Newfoundland and Labrador (RDC) will provide $16.5 million in funding, over five years, to build the new Centre.

The Canada-Newfoundland Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board [C-NLOPB] has written to the federal Environment Minister requesting the appointment of a mediator or panel to review oil exploration in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, off Cape Anguille. Max Ruelokke, P.Eng. is the chairman of C-NLOPB.

Dr. John Quaicoe, P.Eng. is stepping down as Dean pro tem of Memorial's Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences to return to teaching. The new dean, Dr. Ramachandran Venkatesan, P.Eng. takes over effective July 1, 2011.

Dr. Steve Piercey, P.Geo. recently received the CIM Past Presidents’ Memorial Medal recognizing his early accomplishments and setting an outstanding example to young CIM members. Dr. Piercey also received a PEGNL Teaching Award this year.

Dr. Faisal Khan, P.Eng. was appointed the new Vale Research Chair in Process Risk and Safety Engineering at Memorial University earlier this year. The Chair is supported by Vale, RDC and ACOA.

Dr. Ray Gosine, P.Eng., vice president, research, Memorial University attended the annual Offshore Technology Conference [OTC] held in Houston in May. Memorial University/C-CORE presenters included: K. Hawboldt, P.Eng.; S. Kenny, P.Eng.; C. Randell, P.Eng.; F. Ralph, P.Eng.; D. Power, P.Eng.; P. Bobby, P.Eng.;  K. Pike, P.Eng.; A. Zahari, P.Eng. and B. Hawlader, P.Eng.

Professor Andy Fisher, P.Eng. presented to the Kittiwake Regional Economic Development Zone at the Manufacturing and Regional Development: Opportunities and Challenges workshop in Gander in mid-June.

Dr. Abdel-Zaher Kamal Abdel-Razek, P.Eng. of NL Water Resources Management Division, Department of Environment and Conservation chaired the 64th (1st in NL) Canadian Water Resources Association (CWRA) National Conference June 2011 with its theme “Our Water – Our Life – The Most Valuable Resource” . Dr. Abdel-Zaher Kamal Abdel-Razek, P.Eng. also received the National Distinguished Service Award 2011 from by the Canadian Water Resources Association for "Outstanding Contributions to the Development and Management of Water Resources in Canada".

The late Dr. Wally Read, P. Eng. was recognized for his substantial achievements by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). Wally was past president of IEEE international, among his many other accomplishments.
