Subsequent to our annual election of the Board of Directors, another PEGNL year has begun. With it have come changes in board membership and the associated renewal of the board’s plans for another year.

Board of Directors

With the sad passing of Dr. Jim Wright, P. Geo., in the past year, the board decided that Darryl Benson will continue on as chair for a second year. With the election of Dr. Ray Gosine, P. Eng., as chair elect, the succession to a new chair is in place for next year. Other new board members are Jeff Card, P. Eng., and Gordon Holden, P. Eng. We welcome their contribution to the board.

Retirement of Steve McLean, P. Eng., FEC, FCSCE

Steve announced to the board in the spring his intention to retire from the staff of PEGNL effective the end of June. The board was saddened to see him bring his tenure as Executive Director and now CEO and Registrar under the new act to a close after 10 years of valuable contribution to PEGNL and the professions. Steve has made many significant contributions to PEGNL over many years, both as a volunteer and employee. Salient among them is as president of PEGNL (1990-1991) and recently spearheading the PEGNL Legislative Task Force working with government in changes to the PEGNL Act and regulations. The board and members of the PEGNL staff wish him and Margie well in his retirement. Geoff Emberley, P.Eng., FEC succeeds Steve in the CEO and Registrar role.

PEGNL Act 2008 and Regulations Update

PEGNL has been adapting to the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists 2008 Act that came into force July 1, 2009. With it have come many changes, among them public representatives on the PEGNL board, changes in the disciplinary process with a board subcommittee, the Complaints Authorization Committee as the first stop in the discipline process, and public representatives appointed by government on the disciplinary panel. Associated with the Act are government regulations that are not yet in place. These regulations are other elements of the law that PEGNL must follow. We have been working with government to get the regulations revised, and expect that this will happen before the next newsletter in the fall. We will update you in the fall newsletter.

Public Representative Disciplinary Panel Members Appointed By Government

The provincial government has recently appointed public representatives to the PEGNL disciplinary panel. These people, along with the PEGNL members on the panel, are a group from whom a tribunal is chosen in the case of a disciplinary hearing. The board was pleased to see the following appointments and welcome the new panel members aboard:

Glenn Collins, (3 year term), Memorial University Registrar;

Halcum Stanley (3 year term), former chair and now member of the CNLOPB, and former provincial Clerk of the Executive Council and Secretary to Cabinet;

Gregory Snow (2 year term), past president on the Newfoundland Association of Architects;

Gerald White (2 year term), former provincial assistant deputy minister
