You may have noticed that some technologists are using a new designation. The Association of Engineering Technicians and Technologists of Newfoundland and Labrador (AETTNL) has adopted the designation Professional Technologists (P.Tech.) for use by its members. This new designation will replace the existing CET (Certified Engineering Technologist) and AScT (Applied Science Technologist) currently in use in the province. Other provincial technologists associations (e.g. New Brunswick and Saskatchewan) are also moving to use the P.Tech. designation. We believe that this concept is being advocated by the Canadian Council of Technologists and Technicians (CCTT) for use in all provincial/territorial jurisdictions. We understand that in all other provinces, technologists associations are formed under provincial legislation, which gives their members "right to title"; that is, their members' rights to use certain designations (CET, AScT) are given by their respective provincial governments. In Newfoundland and Labrador, however AETTNL does not have provincial legislation but rather operates as a corporation. AETTNL is able to permit its members to use designations under rights authorized by CCTT. CCTT has nationally trade marked a number of designations, CET & AScT among them. It is currently seeking to trade mark P.Tech. also. © Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador |
