Harold Snyder passed away peacefully in Kingston on Monday, September 17, 2007, leaving to mourn his wife Adele, five children, 11 grandchildren and his brother Douglas. Born in Shawinigan in 1926, Harold served in the Canadian Armoured Corps before attending McGill University to study civil engineering. His career spanned international projects in mining and construction engineering, with companies such as Rio Algom and Brinco. He worked on the Churchill Falls hydroelectric project, rising from construction and project manager to executive vice-president of CFLCo. In 1975, he founded the Centre for Cold Ocean Resources Engineering (C-CORE) in St. John's and lectured in engineering at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He and Adele retired to Stanstead, Que., in 1990, and he involved himself in local community programs, including the Centenary United Church and Rotary. They moved to Kingston, Ont. in 2002 where he received a Diploma in Restorative Justice from Queen's Theological College and made weekly visits to prison inmates. He was an Officer of the Order of Canada, a United Empire Loyalist, Fellow of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineering and a member of the Science Council of Canada. © Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador |
