As summer season begins and the Annual General Meeting approaches, it is a perfect time to look back and recognize the many achievements of your firm, your engineers and geoscientists, and the general membership over the past year. Often, engineers and geoscientists fail to promote themselves and acknowledge the efforts of their peers. As a result, opportunities are missed to credit others for their efforts and ourselves as a profession. Through nomination, we can do more than simply recognize deserving individuals. We can foster high morale among employees, evaluate company status and profile, set goals for our membership and increase public awareness of our profession and its contribution to society. APEGN has seven awards which are available each year. They include Honorary Membership, Award of Merit, Award for Service, the Environmental Award, the Early Accomplishment Award, the Community Service Award, and the Teaching Award. Please take this opportunity to read the following descriptions and then look through your organization for deserving nominees. Should you be aware of others outside your organization, do not hesitate to put their names forward. Information is also available for CCPE Awards. If you are aware of any other awards relevant to our profession but granted by other groups and organizations, please inform the APEGN Awards Committee. Outside service groups and industry associations often award companies and individuals for various reasons. APEGN would like to take a pro-active approach in nominating its members for these awards. If you have any nominations or information useful to the Awards Committee, please contact Daisy Foster at the APEGN office. Nominations should be made by June 16, 2003. Honorary Membership Non APEGN members are eligible to receive Honorary Membership in the Association as provided for in the by-laws:
Award of Merit The Award of Merit was established to recognize members of APEGN who have made outstanding contributions to the profession and/or to the community. This recognition takes the form of an "Award of Merit" scroll which is normally presented to the recipient at an appropriate event during the year. The Awards Committee is presently accepting nominations for this award. In reviewing nominations, the following factors are considered:
Award for Service The Award for Service is awarded to members of APEGN who have served their profession diligently for many years and who have also made substantial contributions to the Association and to the advancement of the professions of engineering and geoscience. Environmental Award The Environmental Award recognizes an organization for the application of science, technology and engineering to human and resource environmental management in Newfoundland and Labrador. Its purpose is to emphasize the use of science, technology, and modern organizational techniques by the engineering profession and others to protect and enhance the environment. Early Accomplishment Award The APEGN Early Accomplishment Award will be given to Association members in recognition of exceptional achievement in the early years of an engineer's or geoscientist's professional career. The member will have shown outstanding work-related achievement and notable leadership in the profession and/or community within ten years of eligibility for professional registration in Canada. Community Service Award The APEGN Community Service Award will be given to Association members in recognition of outstanding service and dedication to society. The award recognizes a substantial contribution to the well-being of society through community organizations, government-sponsored activities or humanitarian work. The contribution may be made in one or more of the fields of social service, religion, politics, education, sports, recreation or the arts and may include either voluntary or paid service, elected or appointed. Sustained activity over an extended period of time is an asset. Teaching Award The Teaching Award recognizes an exemplary contribution by an individual in the areas of engineering and/or geoscience education. © Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland |
